Slipping between the notions of fashion and art, Kate Langrish Smith's practice crosses disciplines: contemporary fashion, ceramics and sculpture. Using hand building, casting and mould-making techniques in ceramic and synthetic compounds, her practice explores the notion of object, worth and desire, with an instinctive approach to display using a continued theme of balance, gravity, composition and assemblage.

After completing a BA in Art and Visual Culture in 2006, Kate spent time working, developing and internationally exhibiting her headwear label  collections. In 2012 Kate was awarded the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Grant to study on the prestigious Fashion Artefact MA at London College of Fashion. The MODE METONYM Collection developed on the MA course and first exhibited in 2014 has been exhibited internationally. In 2014 she furthered her material interests in ceramics and polymers at the Haute École d'Art et Design in Geneva at 'CERCCO'  - The Centre for Experimentation and Realisation in Contemporary Ceramics. She is currently based in Sheffield at the Yorkshire Artspace.
